Welcome Back

         It is my first time back in a media studies class since my sophomore year of high school. Now, I'm a senior. Joining this class again will be very interesting to see how my artistic style has changed over the two years. In my sophomore year, I felt like I didn't really know who I was, what I liked, and what resonated with me. I was in that phase of life trying to please everyone around me instead of focusing on myself.  Now I have definitely grown and matured into my own being. Especially with quarantine, it has really given me time to get to know myself. What better time to start an artistic project! I am really intrigued to see how all of this reflects in my art during this class.

    This class is different than the AS level media class, however. I feel like it will be way more of a challenge to produce an entire short film, rather than just an opening scene. It's going to take a lot of time and planning to make sure that this is executed professionally. Luckily, one of my close friends, Alex, is in this class. We both are very creative and I think that we will be able to come up with some good ideas. Also, the fact that we are good friends will allow us to bounce ideas off of each other, without worrying about creating an uncomfortable environment. We both are used to constructive criticism. 

    We did the opening scene project together for the AS level media class, except with two other members. I think that our background of previously working on a project like this will benefit us in the long run. We already know who is good at what, like with filming, acting, and editing. I remember last year my favorite part of the project was the editing. I am really excited to get into that again.

    So, overall I am ready to tackle this project. It will be a great experience.

Re-Filming

 While looking over our film, we noticed some stuttering in the dialogue between the characters. So, we went ahead and refilmed the opening scene and Elle's argument between her and her mom. Since these are the more dialogue-based scenes, we had some difficulty nailing lines. First, we went back and rehearsed. Simply just sitting and repeating lines to each other. We found it is so hard to not giggle! After a few tries of that, and when we thought we had mastered the lines themselves, we went to go practice on the scene.  We started with the scene at home. We practice the lines again with my mom, who was acting as Elle's mom in the scene. After a few shots, it seemed as if we got the perfect shot. We noticed we were able to get the scene to flow more and get some more drama out of it. Then we went to film the opening scene. Alex and I practiced for a little while before.   Critical Reflection Questions How do your products represent social groups or issues? Our film, “Deception” lays into the ideas of complicity in our society. We all seem to just go along with everything around us without challenging anything. In our film, Alex and I wanted to make the audience step back, and think about how they are living their lives. Are they just playing into the illusion of control like our main character, Elle, or are they breaking boundaries and trying to go the extra step to living a unique life. At the end of our film, it is shown that Elle’s whole life was just a simulation being run by scientists, which is how Alex and I feel people are going about their lives now. How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?
